About the presenter:

Miles DeCastro is the owner of North Country Winds, a clarinet shop in northern New York specializing in artist-level clarinet repairs and modifications, as well as stocking fine clarinets and accessories. Miles is also on faculty as the Instrument Repair Technician at The Crane School of Music, SUNY Potsdam, where he is responsible for the repair and maintenance of over 1200 instruments and teaches courses in instrument repair technology. Miles is the current president of the National Association of Professional Band Instrument Repair Technicians (NAPBIRT).

Dr. Laura Armstrong is a faculty member of Mount St. Mary’s University and Frederick Community College, where she teaches clarinet, saxophone, and music fundamentals. She has performed in recitals in the Mid-Atlantic region and has performed as a soloist at the International Clarinet Association’s Clarinet Fest held in Ostend, Belgium in 2018. She is also a member of the Peacherine Ragtime Society Orchestra and can be heard on their most current album Jazzin’ the Blues Away. In 2015, Laura started her own reed making business, Aurora Winds. She lives in Baltimore, MD.

Recently formed in the fall of 2020, The Goodwin Avenue Trio has been applauded for their “spectacular phrasing, ensemble work, and artistry.” The trio is committed to featuring contemporary works alongside classical repertoire, with music ranging from Brahms & Mozart to Muczynski & Hallman. In the fall of 2020, the trio was featured on The University of Illinois String Chamber Music Recital and completed an entirely self-produced, recorded, and edited video of the Brahms Clarinet Trio, Op. 114. Nicholas Cox served as Principal Clarinet of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra between 1992 and 2014, during which time he performed concertos by Copland, Weber, Nielsen, Bruch, Richard Strauss and Mozart, and recorded the symphonies of Beethoven, Nielsen, Shostakovich and Rachmaninov, and the tone poems of Strauss and Suk. He has also appeared as Guest Principal with the LSO, Philharmonia, Academy of St Martin’s, London Sinfonietta, Royal Northern Sinfonia, English National Opera, Royal Opera, Royal Philharmonic, City of Birmingham Symphony, Hallé, and all BBC Orchestras. Nicholas has held the position of Principal Clarinet of the Milton Keynes City Orchestra since 1991 and, as a soloist, has appeared at venues including the Wigmore and Queen Elizabeth Halls, and at the Edinburgh, Cheltenham, Brighton and Huddersfield Festivals.

Nicholas’ profile as a player is also matched by a teaching career of distinction. An RNCM Tutor for over 20 years, many of his former pupils now hold positions in professional orchestras, and in 2006 his Junior RNCM student, Mark Simpson, became the first person to win both the BBC Young Musician and BBC Young Composer of the Year Awards. As a recording artist, Nicholas’ performance of the Mozart Clarinet Concerto and Quintet (ClassCD 1502) was released in 2003 and immediately became Classic FM’s CD of the Week, subsequently becoming one of the station’s most frequently broadcast versions of this much loved work. Other recordings include Strauss Duett-Concertino, Brahms and Reger Sonatas, the Bliss Quintet and a well-received disc of English repertoire entitled the Thurston Connection (Naxos).

Nicholas’ research and editorial work has involved producing modern realisations of the Clarinet Sonatas by the French classical composer Francois Devienne for EditionHH, performing editions of the clarinet Works of Mieczyslaw Weinberg for PeerMusic, and editions of the late works of Iain Hamilton for QTPublications. He has lectured on Brahms in German and English, notably at the International Clarinet Assocation Festival in Madrid in 2015, at the Istanbul International Woodwind Festival in 2016, and for a residency at CSU Northridge. He is currently researching the repertoire for solo clarinet since Stravinsky’s Three Pieces of 1919.

The first Asian musician ever appointed to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, as well as the longest-serving clarinetist in CSO history, John Bruce Yeh joined the CSO in June of 1977, having been appointed solo Bass Clarinet of the Orchestra at the age of nineteen by Sir Georg Solti. Two years later, he was named Assistant Principal and solo E-flat Clarinet. He served as Acting Principal Clarinet of the CSO from 2008-2011. Recently he has also performed as Guest Principal Clarinet of The Philadelphia Orchestra as well as of the Seoul Philharmonic in Korea and the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra in China. Yeh has performed concertos with the CSO on several occasions, including the 1998 American premiere of Elliott Carter’s Clarinet Concerto with Pierre Boulez conducting, and the 1993 performance of Carl Nielsen’s Clarinet Concerto with Neeme Järvi. A concert recording of the Nielsen was released on the CSO CD set Soloists of the Orchestra II: From the Archives, vol. 15. In 2004, Yeh was featured in Leonard Bernstein’s Prelude, Fugue and Riffs in collaboration with the Hubbard Street Dance Company and the CSO conducted by David Robertson. An enthusiastic champion of new music, John Bruce Yeh is the dedicatee of new works for clarinet by numerous composers, ranging from Ralph Shapey to John Williams.

A prizewinner at both the 1982 Munich International Music Competition and the 1985 Naumburg Clarinet Competition in New York, Yeh continues to solo with orchestras around the globe. His more than a dozen solo and chamber music recordings have earned worldwide critical acclaim. In 2007, Naxos International released a disc titled “Synergy,” of single and double concertos with clarinet and symphonic wind ensemble featuring John, his wife Teresa, his daughter Molly, and the Columbus State University Wind Ensemble conducted by Robert Rumbelow. Yeh is director of Chicago Pro Musica, which received the Grammy Award in 1986 for Best New Classical Artist. He frequently appears at festivals and on chamber music series worldwide, and he has performed several times with Music from Marlboro; the Guarneri, Ying, Colorado, Pacifica, Calder, and Avalon string quartets; as well as the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center.

With his wife, clarinetist Teresa Reilly, erhu virtuoso Wang Guowei, and pipa virtuoso Yang Wei, Yeh formed Birds and Phoenix an innovative quartet dedicated to musical exploration by bridging Eastern and Western musical cultures. In their debut performance in September 2006, the group performed works by Victoria Bond, Pamela Chen, Lu Pei, and Bright Sheng, all commissioned for them by Fontana Chamber Arts in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Passionately committed to music education, Yeh served for twenty-six years on the faculty of DePaul University’s School of Music, and he joined the faculty at Roosevelt University’s Chicago College for the Performing Arts in 2004. He has taught master classes at many universities and conservatories including the Juilliard, Eastman and Manhattan Schools of Music, The Cleveland Institute of Music, Northwestern University, and the University of Michigan. In addition, he is on the faculty of Midwest Young Artists in Fort Sheridan, Illinois. Born in Washington, D.C., and raised in Los Angeles, John Bruce Yeh pursued premedical studies at UCLA, where he also won the Frank Sinatra Musical Performance Award. He entered the Juilliard School in 1975 and attended music schools in Aspen, Marlboro, and Tanglewood. He cites Gordon Herritt, Gary Gray, Michele Zukovsky, Harold Wright, Ray Still, Marcel Moyse, Allan Dennis, and Mehli Mehta as influential mentors.

At the time Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto was written, music would have been performed very differently than how we interpret it today. From the concepts of phrasing, articulation, and tempo, to the role of the performer as creator through ornamentation and embellishment, historical clarinet specialist, Dr. Marie Ross, will lead this explorative panel through sound worlds of the Classical era. She will demonstrate her Mozart-era five-key boxwood basset clarinet, revealing how the tones of the instrument created the expressive aesthetic of the time and why it is essential for modern players to be familiar with the instrument of the past. As historically informed performance begins to permeate mainstream classical music, knowledge of the classical style can broaden expressive possibilities for modern players as well as embolden their artistic creativity.

About the performer:

Jhoan Sebastian Rubiano Saavedra is a Colombian musician and studies at the National University of Colombia with Jose Gomes, he began his musical studies in his hometown with maestro Hernando Pinzón, after he has studied with some teachers such as Ranieri Chacón, Hector pinzón, and Fredy Pinzón. He has had national and International tours with the Young Philharmonic of Colombia prestigious concert halls such as Musikverein Goldener Saal (Vienna), Tonhalle (Zurich), Konzertaus Freiburg, Liederhalle (Stuttgart), Brucknerhaus (Linz), Alte Oper (Frankfurt), Cologne Philharmonie, and under the baton of directors such as Andres Orozco-Estrada, Lawrence Renes, among others,, he has been awarded in some national and international competitions.

Reinhard Wieser has studied with Alfred Prinz of the Vienna Philharmonic. At age 19 he was appointed to the position of Prinicipal Clarinet at the Wiener Symphoniker. In addition to more than 35 years playing in the orchestra, he holds a good reputation as a soloist, having performed with renowned conductors such as Adam Fischer, Fabio Luisi, Oleg Caetani, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Bertrand de Billy, Yakov Kreizberg, and Georges Prétre. Reinhard plays chamber music with the Wiener Kammermusiker, Johann Strauss Ensemble, and other artists of note such as Renaud Capucon and Philippe Jordan. Since 1996, Reinhard Wieser has taught at the MUK University of Vienna. He has hosted numerous masterclasses in Austria, Germany, Spain, France, Malta, Venezuela, Japan, and the USA.

In this session, you will learn the essential components of a successful beginner curriculum and how to troubleshoot common issues of first-year players.

About the presenter:

Paula Corley is a clarinetist and music educator with 40 years of teaching and performing experience. She is the ‘mayor’ of Clarinet City and the clarinet instructor at Texas Lutheran University in Seguin. Paula is a chamber music judge for the National Chamber Music Festival (Music for All) and recently completed a two-year term as the Pedagogy Chair for the International Clarinet Association. Originally from Mississippi, Paula grew up without access to clarinet lessons which sparked a lifelong interest in research for developing players. She is a graduate of Mississippi State University (BME) where she was named Alumnus of the Year in 2012-13, and Southern Methodist University (MM). Author of So You Want to Play the Clarinet and The Break (Southern/Hal Leonard), Paula has performed and presented at music conferences throughout the US since 1998. She is an artist and clinician for Buffet Crampon and Vandoren. Her articles have appeared in The Clarinet, Vandoren WAVE, the Texas Bandmasters Review, and The Instrumentalist. Korean-born clarinetist Wonkak Kim has captivated audiences around the world with his “excellent breath control” (The Washington Post) and “exuberant musicianship” (Fanfare). Kim appeared as a soloist and chamber musician throughout the United States, Europe, Asia, and South America. A Naxos Recording Artist, he has garnered international acclaim through his extensive discography. Kim is Assistant Professor of Clarinet at the University of Oregon and a performing artist/clinician for Buffet Crampon, Silverstein, and Vandoren. He is regularly invited as a guest artist and teacher at renowned institutions, including the Juilliard, Yale, and Manhattan School of Music.

Todd Waldecker has served since 1998 as Professor in the School of Music at Middle Tennessee State University where he teaches applied clarinet, clarinet pedagogy and chamber music. He received the MTSU Foundation Outstanding Teacher Award in 2006. He holds degrees from Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music, Yale University, and the University of Missouri. He has served on the faculty of the Tennessee Governor’s School for the Arts, the Sewanee Summer Music Festival, the University of Northern Iowa, the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, Purdue University, and in residency as a guest instructor at Indiana University in 2011. He is a frequent performer with the Grammy Award-Winning Nashville Symphony Orchestra and has toured and recorded with the ensemble for the Decca and NAXOS labels, and in broadcasts on National Public Television.

Clarinettist Cathy Wood has established herself internationally as a performer, educator, and advocate of Canadian music. She has been featured as a guest artist at many festivals including the ICA ClarinetFests. An enthusiast of new music, Wood has commissioned and premiered numerous works at festivals that celebrate new music, including the Winnipeg New Music Festival and Iceland’s Dark Music Days. A proponent of the piccolo clarinets, Catherine has commissioned works for both E-Flat and D clarinets. Wood teaches at Brandon University and serves as Chair of North America for the International Clarinet Association. She is a Buffet Crampon performing artist.

Michael Webster is Professor of Music at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music and Artistic Director of the award-winning Houston Youth Symphony. Formerly Principal Clarinet with the Rochester Philharmonic and Acting Principal with the San Francisco Symphony, he has appeared with the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Boston Pops, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the 92nd Street Y, the Tokyo, Cleveland, Muir, Ying, and Dover Quartets, and many of North America’s finest festivals. Webster has performed and taught all over the United States and in Canada, Central and South America, Europe, Japan, China, New Zealand, and Australia.

Jose Franch-Ballester will be working in this masterclass with three amateur adult clarinetists in a range of experience levels.

Clarinetist Jose Franch-Ballester is a captivating performer of “poetic eloquence” (The New York Sun) and “technical wizardry” (The New York Times). He plays regularly at the Bridgehampton Chamber Music Festival, Chamber Music Northwest, the Saratoga Chamber Music Festival, the Skaneateles Festival, Camerata Pacifica, and Music from Angel Fire. He has also appeared at the Usedomer Musikfestival in Germany, the Verbier Festival in Switzerland, the Cartagena Festival Internacional de Música in Colombia, and the Young Concert Artists Festival in Tokyo, Japan. As a soloist, he has appeared with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, the BBC Concert Orchestra, the Santa Barbara Orchestra, and numerous Spanish orchestras. Winner of the 2004 Young Concert Artists International Auditions, he was presented in debut recitals in New York and in Washington, DC at the Kennedy Center. In 2008, he won a coveted Avery Fisher Career Grant. He was awarded the Cannes’ Midem Prize, which aims to introduce artists to the classical recording industry. With the Chamber Music Society, he has recorded Bartók’s Contrasts on the Deutsche Grammophon label. Born in Moncofa, Spain into a family of clarinetists and Zarzuela singers, Mr. Franch-Ballester graduated from the Joaquin Rodrigo Music Conservatory. He earned a bachelor’s degree from The Curtis Institute of Music, where he studied with Donald Montanaro and Pamela Frank. He is an alum of The Bowers Program (formerly CMS Two).

ICA Plays On! 2021 – Contemporary Clarinet Techniques with Turkish Clarinetist Selin Gürol

Join clarinetist Selin Gürol as she presents a lecture on in English/Turkish on double tonguing and double staccato.

About the presenter

Originally from Istanbul, Selin Gürol started playing the clarinet at the age of 11 and was graduated from Music High School of Bilkent University in Selen Özyıldırım’s class in Ankara, Turkey. Later on, she attended the undergraduate class of Michel Lethiec at the “Conservatoire National de Nice” where she was awarded the “Prix de Perfectionnement” and obtained her Soloist Bachelor Diploma at Nice University. After perfecting her skills in France, she decided to move to Switzerland in order to continue her musical career in Frédéric Lapin’s class at “Haute Ecole de Musique de Lausanne” where she obtained her Master of Arts in Music Performance Diploma.

Successfully passing the audition of Zurich Opera where only one person is welcomed annually, Ms. Gürol started her internship in Philharmonia Zürich – Opernhaus whilst being qualified for the Master Specialized in Orchestra Performance in “Zürcher Hochschule der Künste”. Given this opportunity, she had the chance to work with many clarinetists such as Fabio di Càsola, Robert Pickup, Heinrich Mätzener and Felix-Andreas Genner. During the masterclass in Chigiana Academy with Alessandro Carbonare, she received the artist’s appreciation and was honored with an Academy Scholarship where she performed as a soloist in the concert. She completed her education at Alessandro Carbonare’s class at the “Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia” in Rome.

She was granted several scholarships and awards such as “Musica Mundi Festival”, Belgium; “Académie d’Eté de Nice”, France; “Eczacıbaşı Foundation”, Turkey; “Bruno Schüler-Stiftung”, Switzerland.

In addition to Philharmonia Zurich – Opernhaus, she took part in many orchestras such as Yehudi Menuhin Academy, Animato Philharmonic, Netherlands Youth, Mediterranean Youth under the baton of Vladimir Ashkenazy, Marko Letonja, Carlo Rizzi, Ralf Weikert, Peter Eötvös, Christian Zacharias, Domingo Hindoyan and Kevin Griffiths.

Ms. Gürol performed as a soloist with the many orchestras such as Istanbul State Symphony Orchestra, Bilkent Symphony Orchestra and Çukurova State Symphony Orchestra. Furthermore, she has performed live on the “Radio Espace 2” in Switzerland with her own project which is called “Turkish Contemporary and Traditional Music”.

She was invited to world-renowned music festivals in Turkey, France, Italy, Belgium, Sweden, Switzerland, Tunisia, Hungary, Croatia, Slovenia, Greece, Spain, Monaco, Germany, Netherlands, Austria, Czechia and Slovakia. Selin Gürol is a clarinetist at Presidential Symphony Orchestra and Henri Selmer Paris Clarinets Artist and Ambassador. She continues her academic career with her PhD in Istanbul University State Conservatory.

About the presenter:

Michael Lowenstern has written and performed music for concert, film, dance, and various other media. Highlights include remixes for the landmark recording In C Remixed, featured on NPR’s RadioLab, stints with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and John Zorn, and touring with ensembles as diverse as the Steve Reich Ensemble, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, and The Klezmatics.

To date, he can be heard on over fifty CDs, three of which have won Grammy awards. Michael has released six solo recordings of his own. He trained at the Interlochen Arts Academy, The Eastman School of Music, Stony Brook University, and the Sweelinck Conservatorium Amsterdam, studying clarinet and bass clarinet with Charles Neidich, Harry Sparnaay, Richard MacDowell, and John Bruce Yeh.

Not satisfied with the status quo in music education, Michael’s (irreverent and occasionally controversial) YouTube channel has become a source of information and edutainment for millions of viewers across the globe. When he’s not dreaming up more videos, he’s traveling regularly as a guest lecturer at universities across the world. And when he’s stuck in New York, Michael serves on the faculty of the Manhattan School of Music.

About the presenters:

Laura Campbell is a woodwind musician from Melbourne, Australia. She specialises in clarinet performance and teaching woodwinds including clarinet, saxophone and flute. Laura completed her Bachelor of music under clarinetist David Griffiths, and received masterclasses from musicians including Sabine Meyer and Paul Meyer. Laura has used her music experience to create her own career pathway, through becoming a woodwind teacher both privately and in schools, as well as creating a name for herself on social media under @laura_clarinetist on instagram, and launching her successful business Virtual Concert Band.

Dr. Vince Dominguez is an accomplished clarinetist, music educator, creative consultant, and advocate for minorities in music based in Providence, RI. An in-demand clinician and performer, he regularly presents guest lectures on entrepreneurship and professional development at conferences and universities across the country. As the owner of Tonal Memories Creative, a consulting business founded in 2014, Vince uses his experience and knowledge as a self-made creative to help others discover their voice in today’s ever-changing world. Vince completed his DMA at Arizona State University in April 2020 where he held one of two competitive graduate teaching assistantships. His doctoral project featured three new works for clarinet by Mexican composers, Victor Ibarra, Hilda Paredes, and Juan Trigos, each underscoring current sociopolitical issues in US Latin America. Clarinetist, Chase Miller is an active performer and Teaching Artist in the central Kentucky area. Currently, he is the Program Director of CKYO-MusicWorks, which is Central Kentucky Youth Orchestra’s El Sistema program. As well as Adjunct Clarinet Instructor at Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky. He was one of two selected to represent Kentucky in SouthArts’ inaugural 2020 Emerging Leaders of Color Professional Development Program. June, 2020 The Kentucky Governors School for the Arts awarded Chase with the Annual Marlene M. Helm Alumni Achievement Award. Which was created to honor an outstanding alumnus or alumna for their contribution to the arts in their home community, their service to the Governor’s School for the Arts, and the dedication to enriching the state’s artistic future. Chase earned his bachelors degree from the University of Kentucky (UK) and Masters in Clarinet Performance at University of Arizona (UA). His teachers include Dr. Scott Wright, Mr. Jerry Kirkbride, and Dr. Jackie Glazier.

About the Performers

DUO DIVIANT came from a longstanding friendship and desire to play music together. Because this combination is rare, the program consists of originals and arrangements made by themselves. So far, they have held concerts and workshops for children, played improvisation over the silent movies, and have held numerous concerts over Croatia. They are now studying chamber music with prof. Ceku on Kunstuniversitet Graz.

Antonija Škorput is a guitarist from Split, Croatia. She was born in 1992 in Split. She started playing guitar at the Josip Hatze School of Music, where she finished elementary and secondary music school in the class of prof. Anđela Jerkunica-Milišić. So far, she has performed at numerous concerts and music competitions, at which she has won many awards. She completed her guitar studies at the Art Academy in Split in the class of prof. Brčić. She is now part of Duo Diviant, teaching guitar at junior music school, and studying chamber music with prof. Petrit Ceku on Kunstuniversitat Graz.

Ivana Bandalo is a clarinetist from Croatia engaged in solo performances, chamber music and orchestra, and teaching. After junior and high music school in Split, she enrolled at the Academy of Arts in Split where she graduated in the class of professor Milić. She won numerous awards and held several solo and chamber concerts. She is now part of Duo Diviant, teaching clarinet at junior music school, being an assistant at Academy of Arts in Split, and studying chamber music with prof. Petrit Ceku on Kunstuniversitat Graz.

Getting into Jazz: an introduction to playing jazz on the clarinet. The masterclass will provide you with techniques and concepts to begin improvising and playing within the jazz idiom.

About the presenter: 

Gregory Agid is emerging as the preeminent jazz clarinetist of his generation. The New Orleans based multi-instrumentalist maintains an extremely active performance schedule playing both clarinet and saxophone with GRAMMY award-winning artist Michael Buble, Delfeayo Marsalis’ Uptown Jazz Orchestra, and his own Gregory Agid Quartet, with whom he has released three albums to date. Agid comes from a strong tradition of jazz excellence, education, and mentorship in New Orleans. As the protégée of clarinet guru Alvin Batiste, it is only natural that Agid has found great success and fulfillment as an educator. Alongside drummer Darrian Douglas, Agid is the co-founder of Second Line Arts Collective, a non-profit organization dedicated to cultivating the artistic and entrepreneurial growth of aspiring creatives. It is no surprise that aspiring clarinetists also look to Agid; his strong social media presence marks him as a leader in the worldwide clarinet community. While boldly and deliberately carving his musical path, Agid says he is simply, “building upon the innovations of his heroes.”
