The ICA is saddened to learn of the passing of German clarinetist Wolfgang Meyer (1954-2019) at 64 years old. Meyer studied with Otto Hermann in Stuttgard and Hans Deinzer in Hannover and had an extensive career as a soloist, chamber musician and teacher. Meyer served as a professor at the University of Music in Karlsruhe from 1989 until just before his passing. He was an advocate for contemporary clarinet works and was credited for several world premieres. He also recorded frequently on EMI, Amati, Beyer Records and harmonia mundi France, both on modern and historical instruments.
One of his most widely known chamber ensembles was the Trio di Clarone, in which he frequently performed with his sister, Sabine Meyer. The two can be heard in the recording below performing an arrangement of Rigoletto Fantasy.
The ICA will pay tribute to Wolfgang Meyer in an upcoming issue of The Clarinet.
