The James Gillespie Library, named in honor of Dr. James Gillespie, Editor Emeritus of The Clarinet, houses the complete collection of The Clarinet dating back to the first issue from 1973. There are over 2,000 articles in the collection, and you can use the Master Index to search by article or subject. Throughout the next few months, we will be featuring past articles on a wide variety of subjects in our weekly roundup, and members can access and read these (and many more!) in the James Gillespie Library.
First subject – reeds! There are dozens of great articles about reeds, but here are just a few of the wonderful articles to get you started:
- Reed and Weep! by David Randall (Volume 7, Issue 4, page 5)
- All Fine Clarinetists Use Reeds of the Same Strength by Armand Ferland (Volume 8, Issue 4, pages 47-49)
- Cell and Tissue Difference in Good and Usable Woodwind Reeds from Arundo donax L. by Marilyn S. Veselack and Jerry J. Nisbet (Volume 8, Issue 4, pages 6-13)
- Fundamental Procedures in Reed Balancing by Tom Ridenour (Volume 11, Issue 2, pages 38-41)
- Reed Tips by Tom Ridenour (Volume 11, Issue 4, pages 48-49)
- An Easy Way to Fix Reeds by Robert Listokin (Volume 14, Issue 2, page 23)
- Claranalysis (reed types for French mouthpieces) by Lee Gibson (Volume 16, Issue 4, page 16)
- The Clarinet Reed: A Bibiliographic Addendum by David Shea (Volume 18, Issue 1, pages 28-29)
- The Reed Connection, Part I by Henry Larsen (Volume 18, Issue 4, pages 41-43)
- A Study of Clarinet Reed Making, Part I – A Case for Clarinet Reed Making by Lee Livengood (Volume 19, Issue 3, pages 40-44)
- Kal’s Korner: A Potpourri of Reeds Past and Present by Kalmen Opperman (Volume 23, Issue 2, pages 16-17)
- Some Comments on Single Reeds by Charles West (Volume 26, Issue 1, pages 70-72)
- All You Wanted to Know About Reeds, and Less by Edward S. Palanker (Volume 26, Issue 4, pages 28-31)
- The Vibrating Clarinet Reed by Brent Coppenbarger (Volume 31, Issue 4, pages 38-43)
Wonderful idea!
Thanks
As much as I respect Bob Listokin (he really was a fine player- some years back I heard him perform with his wife on piano, very musical performance) his article above “an easy way to fix reeds” is not very helpful. Every player/student I’ve known that has adopted his advice abandoned it fairly quickly. He made it work, so I guess someone else might- but for most people his “reed bending” doesn’t really solve any problems and creates new ones. Sorry.
