Advertising in The Clarinet

The ICA has moved to a digital first publication for Volume 51 (December 2023). We will still ship printed copies to institutions and members can order print copies from our direct to consumer printing service MagCloud.

The Clarinet is the official publication of the International Clarinet Association (ICA ). Published four times annually and contains approximately 88 pages, full color, printed offset on 70 lb. gloss stock. The Trim size is 8.75 ” x 11.25” with 0.25 ” bleed on each side.

Our readership is nearing 5,000 members worldwide. Back issues are available for previous printed issues through mail.

Advertisers will receive a digital copy of any issue containing their ad(s) and will be invoiced after the issue is sent out. A clickable link will also be provided in the PDF at no cost.

Call for Journal Submissions

The International Clarinet Association welcomes contributions from our members for possible inclusion in our quarterly journal, The Clarinet. If you wish to submit an article proposal, a completed article, or audio/print materials for review, please reference the following information and deadlines.*

Please note: The Clarinet is an educational publication of the ICA and is intended to be solely for the benefit of its members. Accordingly, the ICA does not publish any articles, statements, or materials that are political, controversial, or objectionable in nature. In addition, any submission of a work for publication in The Clarinet containing statements considered to be defamatory and/or libelous, in the sole discretion of the ICA Board of Directors, will not be published. All decisions regarding content to be published in The Clarinet, are in the sole and absolute discretion of the ICA Board of Directors.

By submitting a work for publication, you acknowledge and understand that you will be required to execute a license agreement in favor of the ICA prior to its publication.

*Articles that have been previously published in print or online, or have been submitted or accepted for future publication are ineligible for publication in The Clarinet. Clarinetists must confirm membership in the ICA in order to have an article accepted for publication in The Clarinet.

Audio Reviews Terms and Conditions

  1. Due to spatial constraints, the International Clarinet Association is unable to include every disc received in the quarterly print edition of The Clarinet, so some reviews may appear in the expanded audio reviews section of The Clarinet Online.
  2. The International Clarinet Association requests that artists not contact reviewers regarding published reviews. Violation of this policy may jeopardize publication of future reviews. The Clarinet does not publish commentary received concerning published reviews.
  3. Professional reviewers thoughtfully evaluate all submissions, but the International Clarinet Association cannot guarantee strictly positive reviews or retract commentary.
  4. Once a review is scheduled for publication, the International Clarinet Association will contact the artist regardless of the medium.
  5. The ICA typically reviews materials in the order in which they were received and does not guarantee expedited reviews. Review timing and medium are at the sole discretion of the ICA reviews team.
  6. The ICA maintains a staff of volunteer independent reviewers and does not accept unsolicited reviews.

Those submitting a recording for review must confirm their acceptance of the above terms and conditions as outlined above.

Article Proposals

Send an email to [email protected] and include:

  • Abstract (brief summary) of the proposed article
  • Estimated word count
  • List of your primary research sources (main works consulted or interviewees), as well as any previous articles in The Clarinet relating to your topic (refer to the James Gillespie Online Research Library)

After the proposal is received, the writer will receive feedback; while feedback may be provided regarding publication, it does not guarantee publication of the resulting article.

International Submissions

The “International Spotlight” column showcases perspectives from the global clarinet community. The Clarinet welcomes submissions from ICA country chairs and other members about historical topics, performance practice, pedagogy, people, institutions, clarinet conferences or festivals, and other trends in clarinet communities around the world; please send items to [email protected].

The ICA welcomes non-English articles to be published along with English translations at The Clarinet Online. English translations may also be considered for publication in The Clarinet, with a version online in the original language.

Guidelines for Submitted Articles

Length

News and event reports intended for publication in the “Clarinotes” section are generally 100-300 words, with one photo. Feature articles may range between 500-4000 words depending on the topic. Longer articles may be published in several parts.

Image Size

All images should be high resolution (300 PPI or better – usually a file size of at least 1 MB per photo). If using a scanner, scan the image on RGB at 600 PPI, and save in JPG format.

Style

The Clarinet follows Chicago style with some modifications. A full house style guide is available upon request.

 

Quick Tips

General

  • Use only one space between sentences.
  • Use the serial/Oxford comma:

Find the mouthpiece, barrel, and bell.

I will either play soprano, alto, or bass clarinet.

  • Numbers one through nine are spelled out; numbers greater than 10 are written in numerals.
  • Use a person’s first and last names the first time they are mentioned in an article, and last name only thereafter (unless the article is informal in style).
  • Do not use courtesy titles like Mr., Ms., or Dr. (except for medical doctors, or in a person’s bio if that is their preference).
  • Titles are capitalized only when used directly before someone’s name, and are not capitalized otherwise.

  • In reviews and less formal contexts, either avoid the first person or use “I” or “me” in less formal contexts. (Avoid constructions like “this reviewer,” “this author.”)
  • Avoid long links; use shortened versions or omit links for easily searchable items:
    This video is available on YouTube.
    This video is available at www.clarinet.org.
  • Avoid excessive formatting in Word.

 

Citations and Sources

Depending on the article, use endnotes, a bibliography, and/or “Further Reading” list (see this reference for format).

Do not use footnotes.

Endnote style examples:

  • [Book] Firstname Lastname, Title of Book (Place of publication: Publisher, Year of publication), page number.
  • [Periodical] Critical Inquiry 1, no. 3 (Winter 1975): 479–96.

Bibliography style example:

  • Last name, First name. Title of Book. Place of publication: Publisher, Year of publication.

 

 Music Composition Titles

Italicize all music composition titles, but use quotes instead when the selection is part of a larger work. Opus or other numbers are not italicized unless part of the title. Examples:

            Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet, K. 581

“Infernal Dance” from Firebird

Piano Sonata No. 12, op. 121

Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune

Der Hirt auf dem Felsen (The Shepherd on the Rock)

 

Other Music Writing Considerations

  • For note values, use numerals for numbers 10 and over:
    Eighth notes, 16th notes, 16th-note rhythms, 32nd notes
  • For octave designations, use clarinet register designations whenever possible.
