ICA Pedagogy Committee 2025 TMEA Presentation – “Clarinet Articulation”
The tongue is very important when discussing the clarinet. Air, tongue position, and the mechanics of articulation, are just a few of the many areas that need to be discussed when working with students on a variety of articulations styles.
This presentation was conducted by four members of the International Clarinet Association Pedagogy Committee. Each are experts in the field and over 90 years of shared experience with working with students of all ages. This session explored the role of the tongue in terms of tone production and articulation. Attendees gained a working knowledge of the mechanics of the tongue, tips, resources, and exercises to try with students, as well as common issues found with students and how to fix them. Our goal is for the audience to be able to diagnose clarinet articulation issues and know how to fix them.
