The University of Evansville Clarinet Studio and Associate Professor of Clarinet Thomas Josenhans hosted two events in 2015: a Clarinet Workshop featuring Wonkak Kim (Assistant Professor of Clarinet at Tennessee Tech University), and the Harlaxton Chamber Music Festival at UE’s British Campus.
The Clarinet Workshop, a one-day event on Sunday, January 25, 2015, brought over 40 participants – ranging from middle school students to adult professionals – to UE’s Krannert Fine Arts Center in Evansville, IN. Activities included a master class with Kim, a reed-making clinic by Kirsten Ahnell (principal clarinet of the Owensboro Symphony), a clinic on clarinet repair by Jonathan Hogan, and private coachings for area students preparing for solo and ensemble contest.
The afternoon’s Potpourri Recital showcased performances by the UE Clarinet Choir and a Pro Clarinet Choir of area professionals and music educators. The evening featured a recital by Kim, who was joined by Josenhans for Mendelssohn’s Koncertstück No. 2, and by UE’s string quartet in residence, the Eykamp String Quartet (Jessica Tong, Alicia Choi, Rose Wollman, and Kirsten Jerme), for Stephan Krehl’s Quintet for Clarinet in Strings, Op. 19. A performance by the workshop’s Mass Choir concluded the day’s events.
The Harlaxton Festival brought college and adult amateur string, piano and clarinet players to Harlaxton College in Grantham, England for a one-week intensive chamber music experience from June 28 to July 5, 2015. Students participated in chamber music ensembles, master classes, and chamber music reading sessions. The week also included a trip to Cambridge to visit the college and other sites. Faculty for the festival included Josenhans, pianist Vincent Adranga, and the Eykamp Quartet. Visiting guest clinician Wonkak Kim coached ensembles and played the Osborne Clarinet Quartet with participants. Other performances included a faculty recital, a faculty/student concert at St. Wulfram’s church in Grantham, and a final student recital in the manor’s Great Hall.
UE’s 2016 Clarinet Workshop is scheduled for January 17, 2016. For information about future events at the University of Evansville please contact Dr. Thomas Josenhans at [email protected] or visit music.evansville.edu.
