Giving Tuesday 2025: Honorable Mention Works Recital
HONORABLE MENTIONS PROGRAM NOTES
Sonata for clarinet and piano (I, II movements)
Alexander Tleuov
COMPOSITE PORTRAIT Trio for clarinet, saxophone and piano
Alessandro Adamo
The title and the structural concept of the piece are inspired by an idea from Francis Galton (1822-1911), a British explorer, anthropologist, and eugenicist. He developed a method of superimposing multiple human portraits to create a composite image. This technique aimed to determine if specific facial features could result in distinct human ‘types’ by emphasizing common traits across different individuals. Following this principle as a suggestion, the piece consists of a series of contrasting sound situations, each with its own characteristics, but together they shape a ‘single portrait’. Although the sections are quite distinct from each other in terms of sound context, common features such as gestures, interval sequences, or chords are interconnected throughout the piece to convey a cohesive and unified musical discourse. Additionally, the composition combines two sound worlds: the ‘Western contemporary’ style and the jazz tradition. While the first represents a substrate of the entire work, certain rhythms, sounds and timbral features are related to jazz and its subgenres, as well as the choice of the instrumentation. From the expressive approach of a ballad to the rhythmic consistency of Funky, everything aims to highlight the interplay of jazz with the world of contemporary concert music.
Secrets of the Clarin Clarinet Quintet
Gerson de Sousa Batista
It is strongly suggested that a “mysterious magic box”, or “Pandora’s Box” be placed in the middle of the ensemble while the piece is played.
