Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki (1933-2020) was a significant figure in the music of the 20th century. Since his appearance during the 1960’s his music has been performed by musicians and orchestras worldwide. Penderecki’s music for clarinet has become part of the standard repertoire. By presenting the lecture “Penderecki and his works for the clarinet” the author’s intention is to provide for the performer a better understanding of Penderecki’s music language and concepts that permeated the composer’s career, and which are represented in his works for the clarinet, including rhythmic cells, harmony spectrum and form. The author will discuss three compositions which represent a crucial contribution of the clarinet repertoire:
Three Miniatures for clarinet and piano (1956)
Prelude for clarinet solo in B-flat (1987)
Quartet for clarinet and string trio (1993)
