This lecture-recital explores the late-romantic period practice options which are available to modern musicians who are looking for a historically inspired approach to performing the music of Brahms. Topics discussed and demonstrated will include: rubato affecting pulse, rubato without affecting pulse, flexible tempos, improvisatory phrasing, interpreting the musical markings of Brahms, and the performance style of Brahms. Research comes from current books and articles by Clive Brown, Michael Musgrave, and Sherman Bernard and approaches discussed and demonstrated can be applied to any classical work from the Late-Romantic genre. This lecture recital ends with a performance of Brahms’ Clarinet Sonata in Eb Major Op. 120, No. 2, Movement 1: Allegro Amabile (1894).
