Program Notes:
Neruda is based on Pablo Neruda’s poem Un perro ha muerto (A dog has died) and is meant to portray the poet’s dual state of nostalgia: the inaccessible joy of the memories, and the unscalable sorrow of the present moment. The work combines rhythmic elements from Latin American music, jazz harmonies alla Bill Evans and Herbie Hancock, and contemporary composition techniques. Neruda includes a caribbean passacaglia on the first movement, (a ground bass with a two-part canon using three salsa tumbaos); a melancholic melody accompanied with serene, jazz-infused harmonies on the second movement; and a mixture of rhythmic and harmonic vocabularies on the third movement, which combines patterns from Brazilian samba and baiao with angular melodic contours.
Hila Zamir’s appearance is supported in part by the MidAmerican Center for Contemporary Music at the College of Musical Arts of Bowling Green State University
