Responding to the Classics in Modern Compositions

Andrea Vos-Rochefort

While I did not commission either piece, I have been thrilled to recently perform works by Texas A&M University-Kingsville faculty composers, Dr. Gregory Sanders and Dr. Chad Robinson. The common thread of inspiration behind each work is the influence that beckoned it into existence. Rhapsodie Noir by Chad Robinson is a darker take on the whirlwind Debussy showpiece, Premiere Rhapsodie and Benny: A Goodman Elegy revisits the jazzy side of the clarinet through a lens of pointillism and fragmented gestures that can be interpreted as nods to Luciano Berio and Alban Berg. This workshop with both composers present to discuss framing new compositions and commissions as response projects or inspirations informed by the past history of the clarinet. We will listen to both pieces and discuss how each project was impacted by the past and how to nurture or establish similar connections.
