by Luigi Magistrelli   The ninth edition of the G. Mensi International Clarinet Competition in Breno, Italy, took place on May 31 and June 1, 2015. Breno is a nice little town in the north part of Italy where Giacomo Mensi was born. Mensi was a talented clarinetist who studied at the local conservatory in Darfo Boario Terme and then took a diploma at the Hochschule of Freiburg (Germany), studying with the well-known player Dieter Klöcker. The event was led and coordinated by the university’s assistant professor of clarinet, Dr. Wonkak Kim. The event kicked off at 9:00 AM with opening remarks made by Kim and was immediately followed by the Clarinet Day Artist Recital. Kim opened the recital with the beautiful works Deuxieme Sonate pour clarinette et piano by François Devienne and Introduction et Rondo, Op.72 by Charles-Marie Widor and was accompanied by Eunhye Grace Choi on piano.
