The theme of ClarinetFest® 2016 is inspirations, and the performance by the All-Kansas Collegiate Clarinet Choir – consisting of 71 clarinetists from nine Kansas universities – that commenced the festival served as a prime example of the great things that can manifest from inspiration. Six finalists summarized their research on a variety of topics relating to clarinet history, performance, pedagogy and literature. Dr. Yasmin Flores began with her presentation “Small Gems in the Grand Scheme of Things: The Concertstück and Drei Lieder by Gustav Adolph Heinze.” Flores gave biographical information about Heinze and summarized the two compositions which were central to her research. ClarinetFest® is upon us once again, hosted by the historic University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas. The University of Kansas was established in 1891 as one of the first national institutions to offer professional degrees in the arts, making it an appropriate site for this year’s “Inspirations” ClarinetFest® 2016 theme. This year the fest is focusing on five great clarinetists who inspired the creation of our greatest repertoire.
