ClarinetFest® 2010

Austin, Texas, USA
July 21-25, 2010

The Butler School of Music at the University of Texas at Austin is proud to host ClarinetFest® 2010. Nathan Williams and Richard MacDowell, clarinet professors at UT, are honored to be the Co-Artistic Directors of this year’s conference, which will be held July 21–25. All events will take place in the outstanding facilities of the Butler School which houses Bates Recital Hall, the Recital Studio and all other spaces for exhibits and rehearsals. Bass Concert Hall and McCullough Theater are within the same one-block complex and will also be used for recitals, master classes and other presentations. Additional members of the artistic team for the event include Greg Raden, David Shea and Kathryn Hutchison, Outreach Coordinator for the Butler School of Music.

The state capital of Texas, Austin has been known as the Live Music Capital of the World since 1991 when it was discovered that Austin had more live music venues per capita than anywhere else in the nation. Today, Austin hosts nearly 200 venues and is home to thousands of musicians.  The culinary scene in Austin is fascinating.  From the tastiest “Tex-Mex” to the finest American and Asian cuisine, Austin offers something for everyone.  If you have time to explore the shopping scene while you’re in town, you’ll discover a wide array of one-of-a-kind shops and boutiques. The variety extends from the unique shops of South Congress Avenue to the upscale designer boutiques of the Domain, Austin’s newest shopping area.  Although it will be very hot in July, outdoor activities are a big part of Austin’s culture. (People don’t just exercise in Austin, they train!) From Lady Bird Lake in the center of town to the scenic vistas of the western hills, Austin has miles of hike and bike trails, more than 200 parks and an average of 300 days of sunshine each year.  Other highlights include the Botanical Gardens and several art museums such as the Blanton Museum on the UT campus, the largest university-owned collection.

The ClarinetFest® 2010 roster of artists features great performers from all over the world. Special events include a tribute to Stanley Hasty who turns 90 years old in 2010, and a concert in memory of Mitchell Lurie.  Also included are recitals, master classes, presentations on a wide variety of topics, competitions, memorial and tribute concerts, the premiere of the winning entry from the composition competition, an evening of concerto soloists with orchestra, the annual meeting of the I.C.A., clarinet quartets and choirs, jazz sessions, receptions, and more.  We will keep you posted as plans and participants are finalized, so please stay tuned.
We hope you will begin making plans now to be a part of what promises to be a memorable ClarinetFest® 2010.
